"Patients heal at HGH. Families heal at MPFH"

Gerrit DykhouseGerrit Dykhouse was a Hyperbaric patient who was recently staying at The Mark Preece Family House. Here are a few of his reflections on his stay.

I’ve been privileged to stay at the MPFH twice now, both times for six weeks. I received Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy to treat radiation damage from cancer treatments. I’m what’s referred to at the MPFH as a “hyperbaric”. Definitely not demeaning. Just a category I guess. Maybe even some love.

MPFH is an oasis and haven for individuals and families that are dealing with incredibly difficult medical situations. Many are grieving and facing very difficult challenges. Lots of fear. MPFH provides a shelter and home where “we” can be supported by the committed staff and each other. MPFH gives us a place to share our stories and support each other.

At MPFH we become part of a family. We bond. And although this “family” is constantly changing, as it should be, relationships are often intense, personal and emotional. Tears and hugs are not uncommon and not everyone’s story has a happy ending.

The usual routine involves daily shuttling to the Hamilton General Hospital, next door, or other treatment centres for any multitude of physical maladies such as burn victims, brain bleeds, stroke and cancer, etc., etc. The list goes on and on and it’s never good.

Evenings at MPFH are often when we come together in the kitchen/dining area. It is common that a meal is provided to us by a group of caring individuals. Delicious meals for our physical sustenance and conversation for our emotional support. Only by being together can we achieve this unique and immensely beneficial scenario.

Patients heal at HGH. Families heal at MPFH. MPFH provides all that and it is appreciated.
